When people refer to "waterjet cutting," they are normally referring to "abrasive waterjet cutting."

Pure waterjets cut soft materials such as food, carpet, foam and rubber, but when you are cutting harder materials such as metal or stone, an abrasive must be added, and it's the abrasive that actually does the cutting. That is why abrasive waterjet cut parts typically have a smooth surface that looks as if it has been sanded.

Garnet is the most common abrasive used for waterjet cutting. Just like sandpaper, garnet is available in a wide range of grit sizes which leave either a smooth finish or a rough finish.Finer grits are used for cutting parts that require better edge quality, while larger grits are used for faster cutting applications where edge quality is less of a concern. Garnet comes in different qualities as well.

Garnet is by far the largest expense in running an abrasive waterjet cutting system. Most shops use a half a pound to three pounds of garnet a minute.

As long as you are not cutting hazardous material, garnet can normally be landfilled. It also can be recycled, either by using your own garnet recycling system or through your garnet supplier.

We recommend that you invest in a garnet removal system to remove the garnet from your waterjet tank. It beats shoveling it out by hand!
