Firebricks are manufactured in ways similar to ordinary masonry bricks but they are fired at higher temperatures until partial vitrification has occurred.
Insulation firebricks are made from high alumina bauxite, for its refractory properties, and organic filler which burns away during firing to leave a lightweight and porous brick. Bricks are graded according to the temperature level they can withstand and are used for lining furnaces and kilns or as secondary insulation, flue linings, in soaking pits and reactor chambers, among others.
They are more dense, which makes them more resistant to abrasion, they have have a lower thermal conductivity, absorbing heat but not transferring it to surrounding materials and a high thermal mass, enabling them to retain heat which radiates back after the heat source as been extinguished.
