Introduction
Black Silicon Carbide is the product of silicon quartz sand and petroleum coke electrofused at high temperature in an electrical resistance furnace. The grains of Black Silicon Carbide are hexagonal crystals that are extremely hard, sharp, and friable, and have outstanding electrical and thermal conductivity and low thermal expansion. Black silicon carbide is – after diamond and boron carbide – the third-hardest mineral in the world. It is characterised by high hardness, good mechan ical resistance, good electrical and heat conductivity and high temperature of chemical decomposition. Chemically, black silicon carbide is extremely resistant and able to withstand the strongest alkalis and acids. Silicon carbide is highly resistant to thermal shock and oxidizing effects of the air. Black silicon carbide is a chemical compound with permanent and stable character. In addition to being used as a blasting medium and abrasive, it is also used as an aggregate for the production of non-slip, wear-resistant and conductive floor coachings.
Silicon Carbide is widely used in cutting and lapping both very hard and very soft materials. Its excellent cutting ability ranges from such materials as marble, porcelain and carbide, to aluminum, copper, brass, cast iron, plastic, glass and quartz. Its exceptional hardness and sharpness enables it to cut rapidly and resist wear.
