Introduction

Brown aluminum oxide, otherwise known as Brown Fused Alumina or BFA, is produced through an electric arc furnace process. Brown fused aluminum oxide is both a hard (Mohs hardness 9) and tough material with high strength, making it an excellent abrasive grain raw material for applications such as blast media, sandpaper, grinding wheels and abrasive discs, rolls, belts and pads. Its thermal properties make it an excellent raw material for refractory applications, as well.

Application scenariosCasting

Brown Corundum is specifically engineered for high-temperature foundry and investment casting applications. Its high refractoriness, low thermal expansion, and chemical stability ensure excellent performance in the following scenarios:

1. Investment Casting

  • Back-up stucco (coarse grains)
Used as a refractory aggregate for the back layers of ceramic shells. Provides high green strength, excellent permeability, and dimensional stability during wax burnout and metal pouring.

  • Facing sand (fine grains)
Applied as a fine stucco or slurry filler for the primary layer. Ensures a smooth surface finish on precision castings, reducing defects like veining or metal penetration.

  • Slurry filler (micro powders)
Mixed with colloidal silica or other binders to create a consistent slurry. Improves shell build rate and surface quality.

2. Foundry Sand Additive

  • Steel & iron castings
Added to silica sand molds or cores to increase refractoriness, reduce metal penetration, and improve casting surface quality.

3. Ladle Drainage Agent (Filler Sand)

  • Ladle filler sand for steelmaking
Placed in the upper nozzle of a steel ladle to ensure free opening of the sliding gate. Brown corundum’s high melting point and low sintering behavior prevent clogging.

4. Refractory Shapes for Metal Melting

  • Crucibles, nozzles, and tundish linings
Used as a high‑alumina aggregate in monolithic refractories that contact molten metal.
